What Is A Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves hair from areas of thick growth to areas of thinning or baldness on the scalp. The goal is to permanently restore hair and improve appearance and self-confidence.
Here are some things to know about hair transplants:
Procedure
During the procedure, a surgeon numbs the scalp, removes hair from the donor area, cleans the recipient area, and makes tiny cuts in the recipient area. Healthy hair is then placed in the cuts.
Method
There are two main methods for harvesting donor hair: follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT). FUE is often preferred for younger men and those who want shorter hairstyles because it doesn't leave a linear scar. Click here to learn more about these treatments and their differences.

Risks
Risks of the procedure include bleeding, infection, scarring, and unnatural-looking tufts of new hair growth.
Downtime
A typical procedure can take about a week, and it can take four to five months for results to start showing.
Not a cure
Hair transplants are not a cure for male pattern baldness and will not protect you from further hair loss.
How Do I Get Started?
Step one of your hair restoration journey at Central Dermatology Center is to schedule a consultation by scheduling online, emailing our hair restoration team at [email protected] or by calling our office at (919) 401-1994 x 5527. During a consultation, you and your provider will discuss and review your hair loss. This will include a diagnosis and treatment plan. If a hair transplant is appropriate, our team will review and explain your treatment options and discuss which method will allow you to best meet your aesthetic goals. An appointment can then be set for the procedure date.
If hair restoration surgery is not feasible, our team will evaluate and treat your medical hair loss conditions. This evaluation may include trichoscopy, scalp biopsy and blood work if medically necessary.
What should I bring to a consultation?
- Previous photos of your hair at its fullest, at a time of thinning and current photos of current hair loss concerns.
- If appropriate provide an example of yourself, a loved one or another hair style which you admire and hope to replicate.
During a consult, photographs will be taken and various hairlines will be reviewed and drawn on the patient to provide an example.
What Can I Expect After A Hair Restoration Treatment?
After the procedure our Hair Restoration Team will provide you with medications, supplies, and after-care instructions to ensure the best chance of success. It’s important to follow the directions carefully and keep the transplant area out of the sun. After four to five months, new hair will start to grow and will thicken over the next six to nine months.
Hair Restoration aftercare instructions are coming soon!
How much does a Hair Transplant Cost?
The cost of a hair transplant will vary from person to person and is contingent upon the number of grafts and the method involved.
Insurance companies will not cover hair transplants as they consider it to be a cosmetic procedure. The good news is that the relative cost of a hair transplant is reasonable for many people to afford and there are a variety of ways to meet your aesthetic goal while still respecting your budget. Please feel free to reach out to Dr. Porges and his team at [email protected] or (919) 401-1994 x 5527 to discuss your options.
Payment is due in full on the day of your procedure. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of scheduling to hold the date for your transplant. Our accepted methods of payment are cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, cashier’s check, or CareCredit. If you wish to pay with a personal check, you must do so 3 weeks prior to your procedure. Personal checks will not be accepted on the date of service.
